MY STORY
I started out probably like most practice owners on this quest. After reviewing our financials I was becoming more and more frustrated to see that some of our rates had fluctuated, but overall decreased over time. Often times this meant passing the cost along to our clients and sometimes absorbing it within house. Our therapists work way too hard to be limited by lack of resources or their pay not to reflect their experience levels and efforts. For families they are already stretched thin financially to provide all the support their child/children need so it feels awful to have to bill them more.
I was determined to figure out the process to increase our rates to minimize the need to pass along the cost to our clients or to have to snub my hard working staff.
So, I began my research. My first negotiation took about 6 months. It was so much trial and error and countless phone calls, emails, and consulting with other colleagues. My next attempt took 5 months, so an improvement, but still a lot of time and dedication. While I learned a lot through the process - it was not easy.

The numbers shown on the graph are based off of insurance carrier rates before and after negotiations. They reflect 35 treatments a week x 48 weeks in the year. These are real rate increases that I negotiated for my practice and the reflected increase in revenue. Pretty incredible, right?
